Man dies after fleeing police

Las Vegas police are investigating the death of a man who stopped breathing after a Monday morning foot chase.

Police said the chase stemmed from a 7:30 a.m. traffic stop at Tropicana Avenue and Valley View Boulevard. An officer who pulled over the car realized one of the men inside, Glenn Ybanez, 37, was wanted on charges of possession of a controlled substance and a Colorado warrant for contempt of court, spokesman Bill Cassell said.

When the officer went to arrest Ybanez, the man ran. The officer chased him about 850 feet before catching him, Cassell said. There was a brief struggle before Ybanez was placed in handcuffs. Cassell said two citizens went to the officer's aid.

Soon after handcuffing him, the officer noticed that Ybanez was having trouble breathing. The officer called for an ambulance. When other officers arrived, they removed Ybanez's handcuffs and began to perform CPR until paramedics arrived.

Ybanez was taken to a hospital where he died the next morning, Cassell said.

KUAM News in Guam identified Ybanez as a Guam native and Iraq War veteran who moved to Las Vegas in 2008.

The Clark County coroner's office has not determined how he died. Cassell said that decision might not be made for weeks, while medical examiners wait for toxicology results.

The incident is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department's Critical Incident Review Team, which reviews in-custody deaths.
