Man dies in shooting in central valley

A man was fatally shot at a central valley apartment complex Sunday afternoon, Las Vegas police said.

The identity of the slain man was not released.

Lt. Craig Klatt said the shooting on the 1400 block of F Street, near Harrison Avenue west of Interstate 15, occurred about 4:45 p.m.

Klatt said police were called after eight to 10 shots were fired. Officers found the man, who Klatt said appeared to be in his 20s or 30s, inside the courtyard of the Island Court apartments.

At 6:45 p.m., one officer drew his gun and ran inside the complex. Other officers followed shortly after. Three men were taken into custody. Klatt stopped short of saying that the men were suspects.

"What we have now are people of interest who may or may not know something," he said.

Across the street, dozens of people clapped and cheered as police took the men into custody.

Klatt said as of Sunday night no witnesses had come forward. Shell casings were found on scene. A motive for the shooting has not been determined, Klatt said.

Several people watching police activity declined to comment. One woman, who refused to give her name, said the shooting was probably gang-related because of the high gang presence in the neighborhood.

The owner of the Island Court apartments, who was reached by phone Sunday night, was not at the complex at the time of the shooting. He asked to not be named, but said that he's owned the complex, which has about 20 units, since 2008. The owner described the neighborhood as "tough" with "a lot of drug activity."
