Man killed in U.S. Highway 95 crash identified

The man who died Tuesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 95 near Rancho Drive after the vehicle he was driving flipped over has been identified by the Nevada Highway Patrol as Jose Lamela.

Trooper Loy Hixson said the 2000 Jeep Cherokee was merging from the north onramp at Rancho onto the highway when thread on a rear tire separated causing Lamela to lose control. The vehicle spun and struck a concrete highway barrier and then overturned and landed on its roof.

Lamela, 43, from Las Vegas, died at the scene. A female passenger, who was not identified, was transported to University Medical Center. Her injuries were not life threatening.

Lamela and the passenger were wearing seat belts.
