Man shot, killed in northeast Las Vegas
July 6, 2012 - 8:52 am
Las Vegas police were investigating a Thursday night double shooting that killed one person at an apartment complex in the northeast valley.
A man and woman were shot about
9:30 p.m. inside an apartment on the 9600 block of Hopkins Drive, near Hollywood Boulevard and East Carey Avenue.
Las Vegas police Sgt. Matt Sanford said the man died of his injuries a few hours later at University Medical Center. The woman suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, police spokesman officer Jose Hernandez said.
Homicide Lt. Ray Steiber said the victim was an adult, contradicting earlier reports from a neighbor that suggested the victim was a teenager.
"At this point we're looking into the cause of the shooting," Steiber said. "We believe there was a dispute of some kind."
The neighbor told the Review-Journal the victim had been shooting cans with a BB gun in his backyard when a group of about eight "gangsters" came up and started arguing with him.
She said the man told them to go away and then went inside his house. Soon after, the group returned and stormed inside the house. The neighbor said she heard shots fired and then saw the people pile into a green SUV and flee.
"He was a good kid," the neighbor said of the victim. "I'm so saddened by it because I just looked at the kid last night."
Steiber said police had no evidence to suggest the shooting was gang-related. He did not have enough details to provide a clear description of the suspects.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Homicide Section at 828-3521.
