Man shot, wounded by Las Vegas police

A man was wounded early Sunday morning after exchanging gunfire with police officers near East Bonanza Road and North Maryland Parkway, according to Las Vegas police.

Police received a report about 4 a.m. of a suspicious vehicle parked in the 2100 block of Sunrise Avenue in downtown Las Vegas.

As officers approached the car, they recognized one of the occupants as a suspect in an armed robbery that took place on Dec. 29.

The suspects fled the scene in the vehicle and led police to another location in the 600 block of North 12th Street. A man and woman exited the vehicle and fled on foot in different directions.

As police tried to take the suspects in custody, the male suspect began shooting at officers with a handgun.

One officer returned gunfire and shot the suspect, according to police officials.

The man was transported to a hospital in critical condition. The woman suspect was apprehended nearby without incident.

No other injuries were reported.

The identity of the suspects will not be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation of the Dec. 29 armed robbery.

The officer’s identity will be released 48 hours after the shooting, per department policy.
