Man who shot himself in critical condition

A man who shot himself after being involved in a Monday morning car crash in the north valley is in critical condition, North Las Vegas police said.

The crash occurred about 7 a.m. near Losee Road and the Las Vegas Beltway.

The identity of the man was not released.

North Las Vegas police Sgt. Tim Bedwell said the man was near the age of 30. He shot himself in the head shortly after the collision.

Bedwell said the man ran a traffic light and then hit a vehicle on the Beltway.

He was alone in his vehicle. He was transported to University Medical Center where he remained in critical condition about 4:30 p.m.

Bedwell said two passengers in the vehicle that was struck were not seriously injured.

Investigators believe the man was headed to the desert north of the Beltway to commit suicide, Bedwell said.

Bedwell said alcohol appeared to play a role in the collision and the shooting.
