Police arrest woman after hostage standoff at Las Vegas motel

A hostage situation ended peacefully Saturday morning with a mother arrested and her child in protective services after a four-hour standoff at the Budget Suites near Rancho Drive and Lake Mead Boulevard.

Las Vegas police received a call at about 7 a.m. Saturday morning from a woman who said she planned to kill herself and her 1-year-old son. When the officers first arrived, they saw the woman holding her son and a knife through the window, Lt. Dan Zehnder said.

After four hours of negotiations by phone, police decided to blow down the unit's door to recover the child at about 11:30 a.m. Neither the child nor the mother was injured, Zehnder said.

The child was taken by Child Protective Services, and the mother was arrested.

Zehnder said drugs didn't appear to be a factor in the incident, and that it was likely a mental health issue.
