R-J columnist pleads no contest to DUI

Longtime Review-Journal columnist John L. Smith on Wednesday pleaded no contest to driving under the influence.

Smith was arrested in September on the charge after a Las Vegas police officer saw his vehicle swerving in the area of U.S. Highway 95 and Ann Road as he headed home from a newspaper awards banquet. The officer noted he saw Smith texting while driving.

Smith entered his plea before Las Vegas Municipal Judge Betsy Kolkoski.

Attorney Wade Rabenhorst said Smith was sentenced to time already served, two days, and fined $500. Smith also will have to take a DUI and victim impact class.

A status check in the case was set for Aug. 25 to make sure Smith has completed the requirements.

Smith has worked at the newspaper since 1985.
