School district lawyer named U.S. magistrate

A lawyer for the Clark County School District has been named a U.S. magistrate judge in Las Vegas.

U.S. District Court Chief Judge Roger Hunt announced his selection Tuesday of Carl "Bill" Hoffman for the newly created position that will give the court a third magistrate.

Hoffman's appointment is subject to background checks by the FBI and IRS, which are expected to take up to three months. The term is for eight years.
