Sisters in Crime of Southern Nevada will meet at 3 p.m. today at Barnes & Noble, 3860 S. Maryland Parkway. The guest speaker will be author, publisher and columnist Geoff Schumacher of Stephens Media & Press.

"A Reading with Malena Mörling," presented by the Black Mountain Institute, will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at UNLV's Marjorie Barrick Museum Auditorium, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. Author and poet Mörling is an assistant professor of creative writing at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington (895-5542).

"Celebrating Local Book Clubs Free Reception," hosted by the Vegas Valley Book Festival, will feature a free reception for local book clubs with light refreshments, dramatic readings from the works of T.C. Boyle and Dennis Lehane, and a discussion of book clubs' "best practices" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts Office, 241 W. Brenda L. Tuttle will have a cupcake frosting demonstration, story time and book signing of "Chef Joey's Cupcake Creation" at 2 p.m. Saturday at Borders, 2190 N. Rainbow Blvd.
