Cerca: Events appeal to shutterbugs and lovebugs

Ely's Nevada Northern Railway has scheduled two special events in the first weeks of February. The first two weekends will belong to photographers, but Feb. 14 will be reserved for romantics.

The first two weekends will bring photographers to the depot in East Ely for the railway's annual Winter Steam Spectacular Photo Shoots. Participants will capture images of steam locomotives pulling vintage freight and passenger cars that are original to the railroad. Here, trains are still made up with wooden cars whose origins date back as far as 1872.

Locomotives and cars aren't all it takes to run a railroad. There's also infrastructure: the engine house, machine shop, carpenter shop, blacksmith shop, depot and dispatcher building. It's all concentrated at the Nevada Northern Railway Museum, now on the National Register of Historic Places. Sessions of the winter shoot are scheduled Friday-Feb. 6 and Feb. 11-13, and each is limited to 30 people, at $425 per person. Reservations are strongly advised.

A special called "Be mine, Valentine," will pull out of the station at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 14. Accepting reservations for adults only, this special will feature a ride alongside snow-covered mountains, with music, champagne and chocolates. Tickets are $32 per person, and seating is limited.

For tickets and more information on any NNR event, call (866) 407-8326 or (775) 289-2085, e-mail info@nnry.com, or visit the website, www.nnry.com.
