Church rallies to support battered women
Members of Victory Missionary Baptist Church, 500 W. Monroe Ave., will donate more than $11,000 to S.A.F.E. House, a nonprofit organization committed to stopping domestic violence, during its 8 a.m. service Sunday.
In a monthlong campaign, members were encouraged to donate a dollar in addition to their regular tithes and offerings to benefit the local agency.
Victory Missionary Baptist Church is a staple in the historic West Las Vegas neighborhood, but a majority of the members come from as far away as Henderson, Green Valley and Summerlin.
Church leadership felt it was the "Christian thing" to think about others who are in need.
"We feel that our responsibility is to our community. We come to church to fellowship with each other. But we must remember that we have to do God's work to support those less fortunate." said Robert E. Fowler Sr. pastor of the church.
Members received a little red box in which they could place donations to symbolize the money was to be used exclusively for S.A.F.E. House.
S.A.F.E. House was established in 1994 by a group of community leaders concerned about the needs of battered women and their children.
