Classic postcards keep memories of Las Vegas full of life

They're affordable, always appreciated gifts for the folks back home, souvenirs that are sturdy enough to last long after the vacation has ended, and, as the cosmic odometer ticks off the years, a valued reminder of good times long ago.

Yet, for all of its virtues, it's easy to overlook the charms of the simple postcard. When one can find them in every souvenir shop and gift store from Niagara to -- we're guessing here, but it seems a solid guess -- Nepal, one does tend to take them for granted.

Not us, though. With summer vacation season in full gear -- inspiring memories of great vacations long concluded -- we thought it'd be fun to enjoy a few postcards from Las Vegas' own past. Aided by the discriminating eye of Peter Michel, director of special collections at University of Nevada, Las Vegas libraries, we selected a few cards from UNLV's collection that illustrate classic postcard genres from burlesque broad to mildly risque.
