Camp Lee Canyon registration now open
Registration has started for three Summer Resident Camps at Camp Lee Canyon, sponsored by Clark County Parks and Recreation.
Camp Lee Canyon is located in the Spring Mountain Range of the Toiyabe National Forest, 45 minutes from Las Vegas.
Each camp has special activity sessions based on the camp's theme, as well as traditional camping activities such as hiking and campfires.
"On the Edge" camp is an adventure recreation camp for participants ages 13 to 15 planned for June 22-27. This camp provides teens with an experience in adventure recreation, including activities such as outdoor cooking, mountain biking, hiking, archery, an overnight camp-out and a high-ropes challenge course.
The Lee Canyon Arts Camp will take place July 6-11 for campers ages 8 to 12. Featuring a circus theme, the camp will offer classes such as acrobatics, tight-rope (low), rolla-bolla, make-up, costumes, stilts and clowning.
The third camp is Omni Camp: An Adventure in Science planned for July 13-18 for children ages 8 to 12. The theme is an exploration of planet Earth, and the camp will include earth and life science classes focusing on the four spheres: the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, and the biosphere, and how they correspond to rocks, water, air and life.
Campfires, singalongs and hikes also are part of the curriculum.
The cost is $400 per camper.
Campers will sleep in cabins with trained counselors. A nurse will be in residence at the camp, and professional cooks will prepare nutritious meals and snacks.
Registration is accepted at Sunset Park, Desert Breeze Community Center, Mountain Crest Neighborhood Services Center and Hollywood Recreation Center. Payment can be made by credit card or debit card. For more information, call 455-1905.
EAST LAS VEGAS CENTER
Film series presents 'Les Miserables'
The classic French drama "Les Miserables" will be shown on June 26 as part of the Cine en el Centro film series at East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave.
Series curator Luis Bonilla will introduce the film at 6 p.m. and lead a discussion in Spanish following the screening.

In this 1998 English-language film version of the classic 1862 Victor Hugo novel of the same name, Jean Valjean, a Frenchman imprisoned for stealing bread, flees from Javert, a police officer whose pursuit of Valjean during the student revolutions in France consumes both men's lives.
The film is rated PG-13 and runs 134 minutes.
The monthly film series is presented by the Arts & Community Events Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services, with support from La Preciosa 101.9 FM Spanish-language radio, El Tiempo, Tortillas Los Arco and El Mercadito.
It continues on July 17 with a screening of "El Penalti Mas Largo del Mundo (The Longest Penalty Shot in the World)."
