'TRAVELING UNIVERSITY'

Dance group offers local master classes

Aspiring dancers ages 8 through 17 have the opportunity to attend master classes.

The classes will be conducted at two locations by members of Dancing Through Barriers Ensemble from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd., or next door at the West Las Vegas Library Theatre.

The ensemble is the educational component of the prestigious Dance Theatre of Harlem and functions as a "traveling university," introducing young people to the art and discipline of dance. Participants will be placed in beginner to intermediate and advances classes based upon age or technical training and experience.

Admission is free, but registration is required. Call the arts center at 229-4800.

OPPORTUNITY VILLAGE

Danny Gans show benefits local group

Entertainer Danny Gans will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at The Mirage with proceeds to benefit Opportunity Village.

Tickets can be purchased for $100 by calling The Mirage box office at 796-9999.

Gans has raised more than $200,000 for Opportunity Village through benefit concerts since 2005.

Opportunity Village is a not-for-profit organization that has been helping people with intellectual disabilities in Las Vegas for more than 50 years through vocational training, arts and enrichment, employment and social reaction.

INCOME, AGE LIMITS APPLY

Free tax help available from AARP volunteers

Volunteers from AARP will offer residents age 50 and older free assistance with personal income tax form preparation and electronic filing at four city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services senior centers.

Personal income must be $40,000 or less to qualify for assistance. In addition, participants in the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will offer similar free assistance to Nevada residents at the Doolittle Community/Senior Center.

Appointments are required at all locations. Participants should bring a copy of their 2006 income tax return and all applicable 2007 paperwork.
