HELP OF SOUTHERN NEVADA
Jobless can find help in special program
HELP of Southern Nevada offers free assistance to anyone who has recently lost his or her primary source of income due to job layoffs, divorce, death or disability.
Through the Displaced Homemaker Program, HELP assists both men and women evaluate their current employment needs then offers a week-long workshop to sharpen job-seeking skills, as well as helping with job referrals and placement.
Workshops are at the HELP offices, 1640 E. Flamingo Road. For more information or to sign up for the Displaced Homemaker Program, call 697-3850.
Clients will learn how to prepare a resume, identify job opportunities, obtain job referrals, self-esteem enhancement, learn interviewing techniques and receive training.
During the workshop, local employers visit with students and share tips on how to put their best foot forward to get the right job. For those who qualify, additional assistance may be given during their employment search in the form of bus passes for job interviewing, food and child care vouchers, and/or personal hygiene items and interview clothing.
HELP's mission is to assist people find solutions to their problems and overcome barriers so that they can attain self-sufficiency through direct services, training and referral to community resources.

Walt Boenig Big Band plays Mom Day event
The Walt Boenig Big Band returns to the Reed Whipple Cultural Center for the annual Mayor's Mother's Day Concert on Sunday.
The orchestra takes the stage at 2 p.m. to play favorite standards from the past. Admission is free, but tickets are required and are available on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday. There is a limit of four tickets per person.
A catered lunch at noon precedes the concert. Tickets are $20 per person and include priority seating for the concert. Space is limited and advance reservations are required. Call 229-2321 or visit the cultural center's box office at 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North.
The band, led by longtime Las Vegas trombonist Boenig, plays big band standards, from "In the Mood" and "Pennsylvania 6-5000" to a Tommy Dorsey medley, and other popular tunes such as "At Last" and "Moonlight Serenade." Special guest this year is vocalist Laura Taylor, who will sing several songs.
