Dads, kids lend us your nicknames
May 25, 2008 - 9:00 pm
Among the duties that come with fatherhood, nicknaming the kids is the most fun.
From the tried-and-true timeless (Princess, Sonny) to the descriptive (Smiley, Slim) to the downright mystifying (Moonbeam, Banana Bangles), the nickname a father bestows upon his child is not just verbal shorthand, but the mark of an intimate bond between parent and child.
For Father's Day, we'd like to celebrate the cozy familiarity of the nicknames dads give to their kids. Just send us an e-mail or a note about the nickname Dad gave you or the nickname you bestowed on your child with a brief explanation of how or why the nickname came about.
Be sure to include your name, address, age and daytime phone number, and send your letters to: Father's Day Nicknames, Las Vegas Review-Journal, P.O. Box 70, Las Vegas, NV 89125-0070. Or, if you'd prefer, fax them to John Przybys at 383-4676 or send an e-mail to jprzybys@reviewjournal.com and be sure to write "Father's Day Nicknames" in the subject line.
We'll follow up with the owners/givers of the most interesting names for a Father's Day story in the Living section and online. Be sure we have your submissions by 5 p.m. May 30.
