Dig It
If you're a fan of comedian David Spade, get set to see him at a new venue here in town. Spade, who was one of the stable of comic headliners at The Mirage, has moved up the street to Planet Hollywood where he will begin a series of dates beginning Feb. 15-16. The rest of his sked for the year looks like this: March 14-25, April 11-12, July 25-26, Aug. 30-31, Oct. 10-11 and 24-25 and Nov. 28-29. Tickets are $89 plus tax and are now on sale online at Ticketmaster.com or by phone at 702-474-4000.
GREEK ISLES LOOKING FOR CHANGE
Uh-oh. Looks like another hotel-casino may take a tumble this year. The new owner of the Greek Isles (formerly the Debbie Reynolds Hotel) wants to tear it down and replace it with two towers with 780 hotel rooms, a 77,000-square-foot casino and 71,200 square feet of convention, retail and restaurants. Presently, the hotel, located on Convention Center Drive, has 202 rooms, an all-slot-machine casino, a restaurant and a showroom with a tribute show to the Rat Pack.
The move makes a lot of sense as the street that runs between the Strip and the Las Vegas Convention Center is becoming more of a pedestrian thoroughfare and that whole area is changing. Last month, Marriott International got the green light for a 3,500-room hotel and casino on 14.5 acres neighboring Greek Isles to the east. And projects under way near the convention center include Boyd Gaming Corp.'s $4.8 billion Echelon, Wynn Resorts $2.1 billion Encore and the $2.9 billion Fontainebleau. Add to that the $5 billion Plaza on the former New Frontier site and you've got a pretty classy neighborhood. Which means the Greek Isles, or whatever the new hotel will be named, should be sitting pretty.
