Dinner raises funds for Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation had a fundraising dinner at Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab restaurant in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace on Sept. 10.

The foundation supports the search for the cause and cure of childhood brain tumors. This dinner gala and the Foundation's Ride for Kids on Oct. 3 raise funds for research and college scholarships.

Honorary dinner committee members attending were Jaki Baskow, Annette and Larry Carter, Elizabeth Foyt, Ronald Kline, David Quillen and Michael Rotolo, who were joined by the foundation's fundraising members Sheila and John Arnos, Charli and Dave Carter, Kelly and Sean Connery, Teri and John Daly, Rebecca Howell, Lorri Jackson, Vanessa Kissell, Judy Owen, Peggy Sanders and Sandi Schroeder.

A silent and live auction conducted by master of ceremonies John Daly, the opportunity to purchase balloons containing surprises, and local artist Jennifer Main painting a portrait took place during the dinner, which was accompanied by wines donated by Southern Wine & Spirits.

Among the supporters were Dennis Lynch, Scott Gilbert, Sylvia and Orlando Saenz, Terri Gurevich, Jack Howard, Sina Foley, Dave McElroy, Judy Robinson, Tom Jones, Bill Pattison, Tara Faber, Tami Belt and Joyce and Daniel O'Day, parents of patient and University of Nevada, Las Vegas scholarship recipient Devin O'Day.

'Wildcat' reunion 2010: More than 600 Las Vegas High School alumni gathered at Sam's Town on Sept. 11 to honor the LVHS 1944 football team.

The dinner event began with a cocktail reception that offered raffle prizes, with the proceeds going to the LVHS Scholarship Fund.

This was the 32nd Wildcat reunion, and this one honored the school's 1944 state champion football team that went undefeated and unscored upon, a feat that made Ripley's Believe-It-Or-Not.

Master of ceremonies was LVHS Alumni President Rollie Gibbs. Attending the 2010 Reunion were eight of the 16 known surviving team members and the children of coach Harvey Stanford.

Former U.S. Sen. Richard Bryan spoke about the team and introduced the 1944 team members in attendance: Don Benson, Jim Brooks, Rheen Call, Roland Cram, Martin Hardy, John Mendoza, Leslie Smith and team trainer Bill Perry.

Unable to attend were Charles Miles, Bob Gallagher, Hal Magelby, Gerald Musser, Thell Naegle, Ron Pace, Bob Ross and Robert Wengert. Deceased team members remembered were Tom Bell, DeRay Eyre, Herman Fisher, Myron Leavitt, Darrell Luce, All Matteucci, Gene Matteucci, Phil Mirabelli, Bill "Wildcat" Morris, Ernest Neuman, Wayne Osborne, Alfonso Rivero, Bobby Schofield, Frank Smoke, George Sullivan, Frank Wolverton and assistant coach Warren Portenier.

Members who weren't located were Don Fair, Dick Fairall and assistant coach Erwin "Doc" Tobler.

A slide show featured old Las Vegas photos, Las Vegas High School history and the 1944 football team. Event chairwoman was Patty Haack, class of 1956.
