Epicurean group pays tribute to chef Joël Robuchon

Epicurean Charitable Foundation honored world-renowned chef Joël Robuchon on May 5 at the Mandarin Oriental. The foundation, founded in 2001 by Rino Armeni, supports culinary students by providing scholarships, one-on-one mentoring and employment opportunities.
The 2010 class of 10 students and their parents joined Christina Clifton, the program's chairwoman, Armeni, financial supporters and invited guests in celebration of the foundation's ninth anniversary dinner.
Seen socializing during the cocktail reception were Camille and Larry Ruvo, Carolynn Towbin, Jesika Towbin-Mansour, Paola and Joe Androvand, Marie Claire Armeni, Marci and Lloyd Wentzell, Asaad M. Farag, Kelly Jones, Scott Farber and Marilyn and Rod LaRocque.
Once guests were seated for dinner, Armeni introduced Elizabeth Muto, the foundation's director of development, and Andrew Economon, chair of the scholarship and mentorship committee. Muto introduced Martha Morales, a December 2009 graduate, who spoke about the program, and Lincoln Spoor, who spoke about giving back to the community. Armeni presented Carolynn Towbin with the Angel Award, given to the Towbin family for its dedication and support of the foundation.
Clifton, who also is vice president of food and beverage at Aria, was joined by Armeni in presenting Robuchon, who has 25 Michelin Guide stars, plus numerous awards to his credit. Robuchon's speech was translated in English by Alexander Gaudelet.
French chef Pierre Gagnaire made a surprise appearance to give his personal accolades to Robuchon.
The festivities concluded with the introduction of Kevin Dimond, general manager of Aureole/Charlie Palmer Group, who will serve as president of the Epicurean Charitable Foundation. Also attending were Nate Hunterton, Kristen Dimond, Oliver Baader, Andy Enrico, Martin Kipping, Win Person, Shawn Ritchie, Luiz Oliveria, Adam Odegard, Jay Bluhm, Rene Werner, Saddiq Mir, Ken Johnson, Rick Goldstein, James Woodrow, and Paolo and Ricardo Magno.
Adding to the ambience of the event were Mandarin Oriental's general manager, Rajesh Jhingon; Melina Beckett, director of catering and conference services; and Simon Fricker, food and beverage director.
