Five local doctors to be honored at HealthFirst Foundation event

Five Las Vegas doctors will receive Humanitarian Awards from the Lions HealthFirst Foundation at a banquet Saturday at the Las Vegas Hilton, 3000 Paradise Road.

The event begins with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7.

Honorees include:

• Dr. Stainslaw Burzynski, for his research and work in treating cancer patients and pioneering work on new treatments.

• Dr. Eileen Cordero, for treating the sick and suffering regardless of ability to pay.

• Dr. Emil Stein, for his work in free eye screenings and eye surgery to needy citizens.

• Dr. Ann M. Wierman, for her compassionate care and work as a hematologist and medical oncologist.

• Dr. Annabel E. Barber, for her research on shock, cancer and digestive diseases, for her involvement in youth and minority programs, and for her leadership as an associate professor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

CNN anchor Veronica De La Cruz will emcee the event.

Among those already committed to attend are singer/entertainer Jerry Vale, who will meet and greet guests; longtime Strip headliner Jay White, who will perform as Neil Diamond; Mayor Oscar Goodman; Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki; and former Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt.

Proceeds from the banquet will be used to provide ultrasound abdominal, circulatory and cardiac screenings to local citizens at prices ranging from low-cost to free.
