‘Gangnam Style’ is so popular it literally broke YouTube

You might think you’ve escaped “Gangnam Style,” but you could be wrong.

Psy’s song was everywhere after it’s 2012 release, and on Dec. 21, 2012, became the first YouTube video to reach 1 billion views.

What YouTube didn’t count on was for its views to keep climbing at such an extreme rate. Yes, people still watch “Gangnam Style” … and they do so regularly. Regularly enough that the song has surpassed 2.15 billion views and rendered YouTube’s count tracker worthless.

Why? YouTube explained in a Google+ post on Tuesday:

“We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY. “Gangnam Style” has been viewed so many times we had to upgrade to a 64-bit integer (9,223,372,036,854,775,808)!”

Easter egg: Hover over the video’s YouTube counter now and it goes crazy.
