GOODS TO GO
With the fall season at hand, nonprofit groups across the Las Vegas Valley have been busy preparing for their upcoming holiday and craft bazaars.
Among the organizations sponsoring fundraisers is the Children's Service Guild, which is opening its annual holiday boutique to the public for the first time.
The guild's 34th annual holiday boutique will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Elks Lodge, 4100 W. Charleston Blvd.
According to four-year member Nancy Vinnik, the decision to open the boutique to the public was to see if the guild could increase the proceeds raised to support the guild's many services and to make it possible for more people to attend the event.
The proceeds go toward the needs of children at Child Haven and children affected by the family court system. The funds are used for "any kind of motivational services, medical and dental services, uniform needs and special needs for a baby or infant," Vinnik said.
The guild's 36 active members have been working on the fundraiser since last year's boutique. Contributions to the fundraiser range from one member making jams and jellies from vegetables and fruits she grows in Utah, to another member contributing a large holiday-themed needlework display to be raffled off.
Members who are unable to make the weekly Tuesday meetings at Child Haven meet in small groups at members' homes throughout the year to work on their crafts.
"They make beautiful aprons, table runners and tree ornaments," said Vinnik, who has made Christmas displays, pine cone wreaths and wreaths made out of corks from wine bottles for the event.
Other items at this year's boutique include handmade quilts, purses, baby blankets, holiday ornaments, items for fall and Thanksgiving, and handcrafted items for pets. There also will be food items and drawings including 25 gift baskets.
