Google Maps adds offline features

If you're frustrated with only being able to get directions on your phone while connected to the internet, the solution might be closer than you think.

Google Maps has released an update to make their product more helpful without an internet connection, the company announced Tuesday, according to Time.

Google Maps users can now search for exact locations, get turn-by-turn driving directions, and receive business information, like hours of operation, contact information and reviews, offline. That's a pretty significant upgrade from its current capabilities.

Users will still have to download the map area beforehand while online. But if downloaded properly, Google will automatically switch to offline mode when a user is in an area without service. The company updates these maps over time, too, so users shouldn’t have to worry about locations being out of date. Then, when the user returns to an area with service, Google Maps will transition back to online mode.

The updates are available Nov. 10 on Android, with an iOS update coming later in the year.
