Woman recovering after year’s first case of West Nile in Clark County

Southern Nevada health officials on Tuesday confirmed the first case of West Nile virus in Clark County this year.

A woman older than 50 infected by a neuroinvasive form of West Nile was hospitalized and subsequently released, the Southern Nevada Health District said.

A single case of West Nile was reported in Clark County last year.

Mosquito surveillance by the health district had previously detected West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes in three Clark County ZIP codes: 89027, 89032 and 89117.

“A confirmed case of West Nile virus in a Southern Nevada resident is an important reminder to everyone to take preventive measures against mosquito bites whether they are at home or traveling,” Dr. Joseph Iser, the district’s chief health officer, said in the release.

West Nile symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, nausea and vomiting, according to the health district.

Severe cases can lead to neurological illness and death.
