Heroes of Southern Nevada awards handed out

The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada recently presented its Heroes of Southern Nevada awards to people who took lifesaving action in an emergency.

In addition, the Nevada Center for Missing Loved Ones, a nonprofit organization that helps members of law enforcement find and reunite missing persons with their families, was honored with the group's community impact award.

Awards were given to individuals in the following categories: good Samaritan, military, firefighter, law enforcement, animal rescue and medical professionals.

Winners included:

* Truck driver Juan Trillo of North Las Vegas , who received the good Samaritan award for helping to rescue an injured motorist from his burning vehicle.

* Senior Airman Steven Darling, who received the military award for coming to the aid of a man who had fallen into a bonfire. Darling helped treat the man's third-degree burns and then transported him to the Mike O'Callaghan Federal Hospital at Nellis Air Force Base.

* Fire inspector John O'Brien, who received the firefighter award for his career with the Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue Service. He also was honored for assisting with medical emergencies at the Boy Scout camp on Mount Potosi as a Boy Scout leader.

* Metropolitan police officer Brian Jackson, who received the law enforcement award for his actions at an apartment fire Aug. 30. Jackson and a fellow officer helped alert residents of the fire and assisted them from the apartment building before the fire department arrived.

* Jaime Ramos, a volunteer with the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society, who received the animal rescue award for his efforts rescuing animals throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

* Tom and Claudia Gamaleri, Logandale volunteer emergency medical technicians, who were honored in the medical professionals category for their quick response to an emergency call on the Moapa Indian Reservation.
