Walker Furniture sponsoring food drive to aid Safe Nest
Walker Furniture is sponsoring a holiday food drive to benefit Safe Nest. In return, donors will be offered free document shredding.
Participants are asked to make a donation of nonperishable food, clothing or cash valued at a minimum of $5 to qualify for free document shredding. American Shredding is co-sponsoring the event.
Donations will be accepted in the furniture store's parking lot from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays, Nov. 12, 19 and 26, and Wednesday, Nov. 16.
According to representatives from Safe Nest, items most needed this holiday season include boxed cereals and juices; powdered milk; peanut butter; jelly; canned fruits, vegetables and soups; fruit and pudding cups; crackers; fruit bars; raisins; and new or gently used clothing. Donations of cash and checks will also be accepted.
The holiday drive began Nov. 5 and already shows promise of being a success, said a company spokesperson.
All donations will be tax deductible and 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit Safe Nest.
Since 1977, Safe Nest has been providing confidential assistance including shelter, food, clothing, counseling, education and other services to individuals experiencing domestic violence.

Design Society to learn about color, kick off holiday season
The Las Vegas Chapter of the Interior Design Society will host its fourth-quarter meeting and holiday kickoff Nov. 18 at the Las Vegas Design Center/
The event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. with networking in room C176. The meeting will follow at 10 a.m.
Special guest businesses, Sherwin-Williams and Ethan Allen, will be highlighted during the session. Sherwin-William's Laurie E. Clark will present a class, with continuing education units available, on "How Do Cultures Influence Color?" Her presentation will define different cultures, give a history of cultural effects on color, explain the effects of globalization on color, and demonstrate how culture impacts the color of design. Ethan Allen's Laura Franklin will provide a brief wrap-up on color and design.
Also, the society plans to offer a year in review and present its inaugural Officer and Leadership Awards.
The event concludes with a celebration hosted by Ethan Allen in its showroom with mimosas and light refreshments.
The design center is located within World Market Center Las Vegas, 495 S. Grand Central Parkway.
