Coverings to make Las Vegas debut in mid-March

Coverings, a trade show and expo dedicated to the latest in ceramic tile and natural stone, will make its Las Vegas debut in appropriate fashion, with more than 1,000 exhibitors from 50-plus countries. The 2011 edition of the international exhibition and conference gets under way March 14 and continues through March 17 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center.

"It's industry consensus that Coverings is unlike any other show and the only 'must attend' event for tile and stone industry professionals," said Jennifer Hoff, president of events for National Trade Productions, which manages and produces Coverings. "This is where design trends and technology breakthroughs emerge, buyer-seller relationships are forged, and education and learning are imparted ."

Among the expo's highlights are the Installation Design Showcase, which illustrates the skills and proficiency of professional installers who create three concept bathrooms by leading designers; PROJECT: Green competition, a program that recognizes outstanding tile and stone projects where sustainability was a driving goal; live demonstrations; and more than 70 education and training sessions .

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

The show also is open to the public and those attending are encouraged to bring an interior designer with them. Consumers who wish to attend may register at www.coverings.com and use the code CON. Registration is free.

Grape Day at orchard offers growing, pruning tips

Who says you can't grow a good grape in Southern Nevada? The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Orchard in North Las Vegas has been proving that wrong for nearly 15 years. Both wine and desert grape educational programs will be featured at the orchard Saturday. Sessions will begin at 8 a.m.

Attendees will be shown how to prune both table and wine grapes using the orchard's extensive collection of nearly 30 varieties of grapes.

The Grape Day program kicks off with general information about growing grapes in our desert. At 9 a.m. volunteers from the orchard's wine making group will explain the basics of wine making and provide some samples of wines made from these grapes. At 10 a.m. a grape pruning class will be held.

The orchard is located about 100 yards east of the intersection of North Decatur Boulevard and Horse Drive.

For more information and to enroll in the class, contact Bob Morris at Morrisr@unce.unr.edu or call the master gardener help line at 257-5555.

Spring vegetable, herb starts available at orchard

Spring vegetable and herb transplants that have been developed specifically to grow in our harsh desert environment will be sold at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Orchard in North Las Vegas on three consecutive Saturdays: March 5, 12 and 19. The transplant sales will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Local transplant grower Bruce Nielson in Sandy Valley has been growing vegetable and herb transplants for the orchard for two years. Buying local transplants ensures that they are available at the right time and are varieties suitable for our climate .

The program is intended to encourage both backyard and small-scale food production in Southern Nevada.

For more information, contact horticulturist Bob Morris at Morrisr@unce.unr.edu or call the master gardener help line at 257-5555.

What can be done to help ailing gardenia?

Gardenias have similar needs as roses. Their health and growth respond best to wood chip mulch decomposing on the soil surface.
