Extension program teaches youths about gardening

Area children are invited to get their hands dirty as they learn about gardening through the Cooperative Extension's junior master gardener program.

Registration is under way for the spring program that will provide hands-on gardening and environmental activities that focus on plants, water, soil and vegetables. Participants will learn to grow healthy foods . Additionally, they will learn leadership skills, service and safety with tools.

The program is open to children 7-12. It meets twice a month from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. A class for those living in the northern part of the valley will be taught at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Orchard, 4600 Horse Road, North Las Vegas .

Another class for those living in the southern part of the valley will be taught at the outdoor education center at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

There is a $50 fee per semester.
