Walker to announce Help for Heroes recipients on Saturday
July 11, 2015 - 5:00 am
Walker Furniture is holding an event at 10 a.m. Saturday to honor the 10 recipients in the company’s 2015 Help for Heroes program. The event will be held at the Painters Union Hall, 1701 Whitney Mesa Drive, Henderson.
Help for Heroes was created by Walker Furniture to provide wounded U.S. military personnel and veterans in Clark County with specialized items not generally available through the Veterans Administration, such as lift chairs, adjustable beds, new mattresses, dining sets and a variety of other possibilities. Each delivery is specific to the needs of each recipient.
At Saturday’s event, the recipients will be presented with certificates of appreciation and honored with a special luncheon, compliments of Famous Dave’s. Deliveries of the furnishings will begin next week.
Walker Furniture relied on letters from the public in order to identify prospective recipients who were most in need. The letters were reviewed and evaluated by an independent panel headed by Post 149 Commander John Rupe, who also visited each prospective recipient to evaluate his or her individual needs.
According to Walker Furniture CEO Larry Alterwitz, the company created Help for Heroes to help make day-to-day living a little easier for a segment of the community that is often overlooked.
Several local nonprofit organizations have come forward to offer assistance toward Help for Heroes, including the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, which will give food and other items to recipients if needed, as well as support in many other areas.
