Housing-related groups receive boost from bank foundation

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation has donated $240,000 to 12 local nonprofit organizations who offer counseling programs and assistance on affordable housing to families.
Each organization was awarded a $20,000 grant June 6 at a breakfast event featuring keynote speaker Lon Kruger, UNLV's men's basketball coach.
The grants were awarded to housing counseling agencies, homebuilding developers, and housing assistance and rehabilitation partners.
The housing counseling agencies awarded include ACORN Housing, Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Southern Nevada, Housing for Nevada, Neighborhood Housing Services of Southern Nevada, Nevada Fair Housing Center Inc. and Women's Development Center.
The affordable housing assistance organizations are Habitat for Humanity, HomeAid of Southern Nevada and Rebuilding Together/Christmas in April.
The homebuilding developer recipients included Community Services Agency Development Corporation, Idaho Nevada Community Development Financial Institution and Nevada HAND.

* Kari Sheffield, 22, of Henderson will participate in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals in Germany for a year beginning Aug. 1.
Sheffield is one of 75 Americans selected to participate in the scholarship program, which will include two months of intensive German language training, four months of study at a German university or professional school and a five-month internship with a German company. The program is open to U.S. citizens or residents ages 18-24.
One of the German participants in the exchange program, Ramona Schoon, will attend UNLV while living in Las Vegas. Schoon, 22, is from Grossefehn, Germany.
* Karen Hahn Falk of Las Vegas has an original short story featured in "Chicken Soup for the Beach Lover's Soul: Memories Made Beside a Bonfire, on the Boardwalk and with Family and Friends in the Summer Sun."
In her story "Beach Club," Falk shares her childhood memories of family trips to the beach. The latest entry in the "Chicken Soup for Soul" book series also features photographs from beach destinations across the United States.
* University Medical Center was recently awarded the American Heart Association's "Get With the Guidelines -- Coronary Artery Disease Annual Performance Achievement Award." The award honors the hospital for its success with the association's secondary prevention guidelines for coronary artery disease.
