Las Vegan’s papillon leads pack at AKC championship event

Bonnie Lee of Las Vegas recently saw her 6-pound papillon Hello Dolly earn more than 1,000 American Kennel Club Obedience Trial Championship points.

At the Great Salt Lake Dog Training Club's obedience trials in Farmington, Utah, on Sept. 16, Dolly became the first toy breed dog to earn more than 1,000 championship points by the American Kennel Club. Dolly finished first in High in Trial and High Combined competitions.

"The High in Trial is the equivalent to Best in Show," says Lee, a trainer and AKC obedience judge. "The High Combined is when you get the highest score out of two of the most advanced classes."

"I am so proud just for a toy dog to be competing against the top sporting and herding dogs and beating them every time," Lee says with a laugh. Dolly is the second dog Lee has trained.

"You don't see too many toy dogs in obedience competition since they have to be more accurate and more precise," she adds.

Dolly will have the opportunity to add to her championship point total at the Yuma Kennel Club competition Friday through Dec. 3.
