Las Vegas hosts National Pole Championships

This past weekend, hundreds of women climbed, twirled and danced around two poles during the Pole Sports Organization 2013 US National Pole Championships at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino.

The event featured pro and amateur events with $10,000 going to the professional winner. The pro event was won by Sergia Louise Anderson from Los Angeles, Calif.

Event organizer Amy Guion says that the sport is still trying to standardize rules and regulations, but that it could eventually become an Olympic sport.

Pole fitness or dancing is a relatively new activity. Pole Sport Organization has only been around for two years, and Guion says that the sport only became popular within the last ten years.

According to Guion, the organization makes an effort to distance itsdelf for the stripper pole image. The competitors define their sport as athletic, choreographed and artistic -- more similar to gymnastics than stripping.

The Las Vegas area is no stranger to unique national championships. Just last month, the North American Scrabble championship was at the Riviera and the Horseshoe World Championships were held in St. George, Utah.
