Las Vegas poets plan an evening of readings

Some of the area's poets, as well as open-microphone participants, will gather for an evening of readings at the West Las Vegas Arts Center Poets' Corner on July 20.

Keith Brantley hosts the free event, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at the arts center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd.

The center is operated by the Arts and Community Events Divsion of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services. In addition to the Poets' Corner, which is the third Friday of every month, the center is also the site of numerous culturally focused activities, from films to special events. Classes in African arts, dance, music and more are available for both children and adults.

The final musical production by participants in the center's annual Performing and Visual Arts Camp for Kids will be Aug. 2 and 4. Boys and girls learn character-building skills through an integrated arts program that culminates in an annual production. This year's presentation, "Genertion Next... Pulse, Passiion and Power" will be Aug. 2 at the House of Blues and Aug. 4 at the West Las Vegas Library Theater. Both presentations are cosponsored by the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.
