Meadows seniors semifinalists in achievement scholarships

Two seniors from The Meadows School have been named semifinalists in the 2007 National Achievement Scholarship Program. Marc Beck and Asia Mayfield are among 1,300 seniors from across the country to be named semifinalists for the scholarship program that honors black youths. Scholarship winners will be announced in April.

In other youth news:

* Bishop Gorman High School will present "The Taming of the Shrew" at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. The pre-show Greenshow will be presented 15 minutes prior to all performances. Tickets are $10 to $12. For more information, contact Elena Ferrante-Martin at 732-1945, Ext. 4214.

* Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Visual and Performing Arts will present "Dearly Departed" at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday in Las Vegas Academy Black Box Theater, Tenth Street and Lewis Avenue. Tickets are $10 (800-585-3737).

* The Arbor View High School Crimson Players will present "Arsenic and Old Lace" at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23-25 in the high school's theater at 7500 Whispering Sands Drive. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and tickets are $5. For more information, contact David Kelley at 799-6660, Ext. 4051.

* Fertitta Middle School seventh-grader Garrett Fregoso, 12, attended the Junior National Young Leaders Conference Oct. 6-11 in Washington, D.C. The theme of the six-day conference was "Voices of Leadership: Reflecting on the Past to Create the Future." While at the conference, youths met with elected officials and congressional staff on Capitol Hill and studied the actions of historical leaders during periods of American History, including the Civil War, World War II and the civil rights movement. In addition, conference attendees visited the historical sites of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., the historic district of Philadelphia, and national monuments and memorials.

* The Henderson Symphony Orchestra is accepting applications from musicians in grades 6-12 for its annual Young Artists Concert Competition Jan. 9 and 10. The winners in the junior division, open to grades 6-8, and senior division, for grades 9-12, will perform with the symphony on March 30. The competition is open to instrumental and choral students, duets and small ensembles. The auditions should be no longer than 10 minutes and will be performed with a piano accompaniment.
