Nevada in Top 3 with low obesity rates, poll says

A new Gallup Well-Being poll released on Tuesday shows Nevada among the Top 3 states with the lowest obesity rates with an average of 21.1 percent obesity.

Nevada comes in as the third lowest in the nation, falling just behind Colorado at 20.4 percent and Montana at 19.6 percent.

Gallup used information gathered from telephone interviews that took place through much of 2013 as part of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index survey.

The poll highlights that Nevadans and other top states with the lowest obesity rates have less of a possibility of being diagnosed with chronic diseases during their lifetime, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, diabetes, cancer and heart attack.

According to the poll, Americans living in the lower-rated obesity states returned the following averages associated with chronic diseases:

  • High blood pressure, 26.4 percent
  • High cholesterol, 23.2 percent
  • Depression. 16.6 percent
  • Diabetes, 9.6 percent
  • Cancer, 7.6 percent
  • Heart attack, 3.5 percent

Furthermore, the poll states that Americans living in the lower-rated obesity states also returned these healthier living averages:

  • Ate healthy all day yesterday, 66.7 percent
  • Ate 5+ servings of fruits/vegetables at least 4 of last 7 days, 59.6 percent
  • Exercised for 30 minutes or more at least 3 of last 7 days, 56.1 percent

Mississippi, West Virginia and Delaware are among the Top 10 states with the highest obesity rates.
