Orr Middle School receives fitness honor

Orr Middle School received the President's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports Demonstration School special honors in March. Orr was honored for promoting physical activity with after-school programs and lunchtime intramurals, in addition to its physical education program.
The school received a donated HOPSports Training System by 24 Hour Fitness.
The President's Council project recognizes elementary and secondary schools for emphasizing physical activity and fitness in their physical education programs and throughout the school year.
Eight schools from Southern Nevada were honored as Demonstration Centers by the Partners for a Healthy Nevada, a community obesity prevention coalition whose members include the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the Southern Nevada Health District, the Clark County School District, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the American Heart Association.
In addition to Orr, the other schools honored include: Culley Elementary School, Dooley Elementary School, Gehring Elementary School, Gray Elementary School, Lawrence Junior High School, Miller Middle School and Webb Middle School.

* Ariana Victoria Gennaro, a senior at Palo Verde High School, has been named a regional finalist for the 28th annual Homecoming Queen Selection scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in Salt Lake City. Other competitors will be from Utah, Idaho and Montana. The winner will receive a scholarship and advance to the national finals to compete for the title of America's Homecoming Queen.
* The theater department at Palo Verde High School will present "Peter Pan" at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday. The theater is at 333 Pavilion Center Drive. * Bishop Gorman High School will present "Seussical the Musical" at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday in the Jim3 House of Performing Arts at the school, 5959 S. Hualapai Way. Tickets are $8 to $12. For more information call 732-1945, ext. 4214.
* Youth ETERNAL, a faith-based nonprofit organization for at-risk youth ages 13-21, will offer a Financial Literacy for Teens Seminar in partnership with Merrill Lynch, Clark County Neighborhood Grants Program, Nouveau Riche University and Victory Green Valley Baptist Church from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the church, 24 Commerce Center Drive, Henderson. * Whitney Recreation Center, 5712 E. Missouri Ave., will have a College Prep Conference for teens and their families at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. The conference will offer activities, information and workshops on college applications, financial aid, job interviews and other topics. The event is free, but registration is required.
