HIKES
Red Rock Canyon: On Wednesday, watch the documentary "The Day the Earth Almost Died," about the great Permian mass extinction, then go on a moderately strenuous, 2½-mile hike to see Permian fossils; for ages 10 and older. On Oct. 21, glimpse back into history on an easy-to-moderate, three-mile hike at Fossil Ridge; for ages 6 and older. Also on Oct. 21, explore from Sandstone Quarry to Red Spring on a moderately strenuous, 2½-mile hike; for ages 10 and older.
Desert National Wildlife Refuge: On Saturday, look for animals on an easy, half-mile walk to Corn Creek Spring.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels, including an easy-to-moderate social hike on Saturdays. OTHER PROGRAMS
Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, view types of venomous animals found in Red Rock in a tabletop presentation from 11 a.m. to noon at the visitor center. On Saturday, bring a telescope or binoculars to participate in the autumn astronomy program. The day session will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the night session from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
