HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, a moderate, two-and-a-half mile hike with 450-foot elevation gain and some scrambling starting at Sandstone Quarry. On Tuesday, a five-mile strenuous hike with a 2,000-foot elevation gain at Turtlehead. On Wednesday, a one-and-a-half-mile easy family hike through Pine Creek. On Friday, a moderate to strenuous three-mile hike with a 950-foot elevation gain at Mary Jane Falls. Also Friday, a six-mile moderate hike at White Rock Loop and a three-mile moderate hike at Pine Creek. On Saturday, a moderate two-mile hike at Oak Creek (515-5367).

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's Web site: www.aroundthebendfriends.com

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, a 30-minute discussion on the geology of Red Rock Canyon at the visitor center, ongoing from 1 p.m. On Friday, an interactive program for children 2-6 years old about the different types of holes animals make in the desert with an activity and craft. On Saturday, an interactive program for 3-10 year olds about spiders (515-5367).

Archaeo-Nevada Society along with the Bureau of Land Management invites volunteers to help with Red Rock Conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org. At 7 p.m. Thursday, Diane Winslow of the Harry Reid center will speak on Sydney Wheeler, the first state archaeologist for Nevada. The meeting will be at College of Southern Nevada, 6375 W.
