HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, a moderate 5.75-mile walk with an 1,100-foot elevation gain. Hike through the Rainbow hills of Mount Charleston and up above an avalanche area. Also on Monday, there will be a short hike from the Lower Lee Meadows at 10 a.m. On Tuesday, a moderate 2.5-mile hike for ages 12 and over. It is a Mount Charleston night hike to an overlook of the Mojave Desert night sky. Bring a flashlight and binoculars. On Wednesday, there will be an easy 1/2-mile evening hike at Red Spring listening and looking for bats. Also on Wednesday, there will be a short walk from the Mary Jane Falls Trailhead at 10 a.m. On Friday, there will be a 1,400-foot climb through an avalanche chute in Echo Canyon on Mount Charleston. This 4.8-mile out-and-back hike will go through aspen and forests to a view of Kyle Canyon and the various peaks of the region (515-5467).

Red Rock Canyon: On. Aug. 2, there will be an introductory mountain bike ride, starting from the late night parking lot. The 6-mile single-track is for beginners to intermediate levels. Helmets are required (515-5467).

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Wednesday, a story will be read to 3-5 year olds about the plants and animals of the Mojave Desert. Afterward, children will be given the chance to discuss and draw a picture about what they have learned. On Friday, a program for children 2-7 years old about spiders. Children will participate in a craft. On Saturday, a program about hummingbirds for children 5-10 years old, featuring a hands-on activity and a craft (515-5467).

Festival in the Pines: Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., festival at the Las Vegas Snow and Ski Resort in Lee Canyon. Sponsored by the Spring Mountains Volunteer Association, the festival features live music, food and drinks, vendor booths, door prizes and hiking.
