HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: Monday, moderate, 4-mile hike along the Lower Telephone Canyon through snaking trails, alongside dense vegetation. On Wednesday, there will be a moderate 3-mile hike to an overlook of Gateway Canyon and Red Springs. A flashlight is required. On Friday, there will be a moderate hike at Mount Charleston though a forest of white fir, quaking aspen and bristlecone pine trees. On Wednesday, there will also be an easy 1-mile walk in the early evening. On Friday, there will be an easy 1-mile hike to observe a variety of reptiles. Saturday, there will be two hikes, one moderate 3-mile one to Fletcher Canyon and the other to the Lower Calico Hills Loop. There is also an easy 1/2-mile evening walk to listen and look for bats. On Saturday, meet at 9 a.m. at the Mount Charleston Lodge for a walk to Little Falls (515-5367).

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's Web site: www.aroundthebendfriends.com.

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: Thursday will be Reading at the Rock, a program for children 3-5 years of age. A story will be read about plants and animals of the Mojave Desert. Then, children will be given the chance to discuss and draw a picture about what they have learned. Friday, there will be a program for 2- to 6-year-olds called Slitherin' Snakes. Children will learn about different types of snakes in the Mojave Desert (515-5367).

Archaeo-Nevada Society along with the Bureau of Land Management invites volunteers to help with Red Rock Conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
