HIKES
Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, moderate 6.5-mile hike starting from the North Loop Trail and heading off Deer Creek Road, traveling to Mummy Springs. On Wednesday, there will be an easy 1/2-mile night hike to Red Spring to study bats. There will also be an easy one-mile hike at 10 a.m. Wednesday, beginning at the Upper Bristlecone Trail head. Friday, there will be an easy one-mile hike to Little Falls. All ages are welcome. On Saturday, there will be an easy, 1/2-mile hike to Corn Creek Spring. Also on Saturday, there will be an easy 1/2-mile rock art hike to Willow Spring (515-5367).
Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's Web site: www.aroundthebendfriends.com
BIKES
Red Rock Canyon: There will be an introductory mountain bike ride on July 5 starting from the Late Night parking lot. The 6-mile single-track ride is for beginners and intermediates. Helmets are required (515-5367).
OTHER PROGRAMS
Red Rock Canyon: Reading at the Rock on Wednesdays, ending Aug. 12, is designed for children 2-5. A story will be read about plants and animals in the Mojave Desert. Then they will discuss and draw a picture about what they have learned. On Friday, for 5-10 year olds, is Bats are a Blast, an interactive program about bats. There will be a hands-on activity and a craft. Saturday will be Calling All Coyotes for 2-6 year olds. Children will learn facts and do a hands-on activity. Saturday ,there will be a Junior Ranger program, taking the children through a series of activities to help them learn about what the forest service is all about. Meets in the lobby of the Resort on MountCharleston at 10 a.m. (515-5367).
