HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: A moderate 4-mile hike is scheduled for Monday to Stanley B. Springs trail for views of Mummy Mountain and Cockscomb Ridge, as well as distant views across the valley. On Friday, there will be a moderate, 4-mile hike to Fletcher Canyon on Mount Charleston. There will be scrambling back to Obstacle Rock in the lower part of the canyon. On Saturday, there will be an early morning 3-mile hike to and around the base of the Calico Hills to the Moenkopi trail and back to the visitor center (515-5367).

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's Web site: www. aroundthebendfriends.com

BIKES

Red Rock Canyon: There will be an introductory mountain bike ride starting from the late night parking lot. The beginner-intermediate ride will be 6-mile single-track. Helments are required (515-5367).

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to noon, there will be a program about Nevada's state reptile, the desert tortoise at the visitor center. On Friday, there will be an interactive program for 5-10 year olds about butterflies. Children will learn all about butterflies with a hands-on activity and craft. Limited space. Saturday, 5-10 year olds will learn about hummingbirds and do a hands-on activity and a craft. Limited space (515-5367).
