Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, there will be a moderate three-mile hike to Calico Tanks to see a natural water tank and a view across Red Rock and the Las Vegas Valley. Some rock scrambling is involved. A strenuous seven-mile hike to Ash Canyon will take place Tuesday. Friday is a moderate 2.5-mile hike up the Calico Tanks to a view of the Las Vegas Valley and see examples of Native American history along the way. Saturday's events will include an easy 1/2-mile Corn Creek Spring Walk in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, a major bird-watching area and a prime habitat for aquatic and land plants and animals; also a moderate four-mile hike through Calico Hills to see the scenery of Red Rock Canyon and watch for bighorn sheep. A moderate three-mile hike and road trip to Valley of Fire State Park will take place on March 8. Also on March 8 is a strenuous six-mile hike to Brownstone Canyon, leaving from Sandstone Quarry and passing through Gateway Pass (515-5367).

Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club: Tuesday at 6:15 a.m. Meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). A 6:15 a.m. moderate to fast 15- to 20-mile road ride on Wednesday. Meet at the NuVision Cyclery on West Lake Mead Boulevard, between Rampart Boulevard and Scholar Lane (228-1333). There will be a 30-plus-mile, moderate and hilly ride Wednesday and Thursday at 7 a.m., and a 30- to 50-plus -mile grade ride on Saturday at 7 a.m. Meet behind Starbucks on West Charleston Boulevard and Town Center Drive. Friday at 6:15 a.m., meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). Bring plenty of water for all rides.

The Desert Riders Club of Nevada: The Las Vegas Desert Riders Club of Nevada, a local chapter of the Honda Rider's Club of America, meets at 9 a.m. the second Saturday of the month at Carter Power Sports, 6725 S. Decatur Blvd. All motorcycles are welcome (795-2000).

Red Rock Canyon: No experience is necessary for this six-mile introductory mountain bike ride March 8, starting from the Late Night parking lot. Helmets are required. Ages 10 and over (515-5367).

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center: On Tuesday, there will be a discussion on the nocturnal primeval world of owls, ongoing from 1 to 4 p.m. "Humming with the Hummingbirds," an interactive program will take place Friday. Children 3-10 years old can learn about hummingbirds and complete a hands-on activity. Saturday's events will include "Tracking Wildlife," a program to explore the diverse collection of wildlife and try to identify the tracks they leave behind, twice an hour from 1 to 4 p.m. March 8 will feature a program about the unique rocks and fossils of Red Rock Canyon. Children 5-10 years can use visual aids and play a short rock game to learn about the geology (515-5367).
