Red Rock Canyon: Monday will include a moderate four-mile hike with some scrambling down the Pine Creek trail to the north side of Mescalito Peak. On Tuesday, there is a strenuous six-mile hike to Hollow Rock Peak with some serious rock scrambling through cuts on a ridge and a 1,000-foot gain. An easy to moderate three-mile hike will take place Friday at Pine Creek Canyon, watching for bighorn sheep and other wildlife. Saturday's events will include a moderate four-mile hike at First Creek to look for signs of late fall. Nov. 9 features a moderate to strenuous six-mile hike to Brownstone Canyon, through a pass, down a wash, up a wash, over some tanks, then back; also an easy to moderate three-mile hike to Calico Basin to view colorful rock formations, three springs, Echo Canyon, birds, reptiles and many plants (515-5367).

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday at Mount Charleston. They meet at the third floor (left side) of the east parking garage of Santa Fe Station, 4949 N. Rancho Drive, for an 8:30 a.m. departure (228-0773).

Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club: Tuesday at 6:15 a.m. Meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). A 6:15 a.m. moderate to fast 15- to 20-mile road ride on Wednesday. Meet at the NuVision Cyclery on West Lake Mead Blvd., between Rampart Boulevard and Scholar Lane (228-1333). There will be a 30-plus-mile, moderate and hilly ride Wednesday and Thursday at 7 a.m., and a 30- to 50-plus -mile grade ride on Saturday at 7 a.m. Meet behind Starbucks on West Charleston Boulevard and Town Center Drive. Friday at 6:15 a.m., meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). Bring plenty of water for all rides.

The Desert Riders Club of Nevada: The Las Vegas Desert Riders Club of Nevada, a local chapter of the Honda Rider's Club of America, meets at 9 a.m. the second Saturday of the month at Carter Power Sports, 6725 S. Decatur Blvd. All motorcycles are welcome (795-2000).

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center: A discussion on the nocturnal primeval world of owls is scheduled for Tuesday, ongoing every 30 minutes from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday's events will include a program on the geology of Red Rock Canyon, ongoing every 30 minutes from 1 to 4 p.m.; also an interactive program about the desert tortoise. A program about rock art in the Mojave Desert will be presented Saturday for children ages 2-5 (515-5367).

Photography workshop: The Zion Canyon Field Institute will have a two-day photography course in Red Rock Canyon, "Photographing the Sandstone Canyons of the Ancient Aztec Desert." Classes will be Saturday and Nov. 9. The cost is $175 for the weekend (515-5367, www.redrockcanyonlv.org).
