HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, there is a moderate three-mile hike at the Rock to share the excitement of this dramatic fault line and cultural history site. On Friday, there will be a moderate six-mile hike at White Rock Loop, featuring beautiful views, varying terrains and interesting plant life. Saturday's events will include a moderate five-mile hike to Potato Knoll at the base of Wilson Peak, crossing Oak Creek four times with possible flowing water; and a moderate four-mile hike through Calico Hills, making a loop. Also on Saturday is a moderate five-mile hike at Lincoln County State Parks and an easy 1/2-mile spring walk at Corn Creek, a major bird-watching area and a prime habitat for aquatic and land plants and animals. An easy two-mile hike to Fossil Ridge will take place Dec. 14, with a view of the escarpment. Also on Dec. 14 is a strenuous seven-mile hike to a beautiful stand of Teddy bear Cholla in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. We'll walk a portion of the railroad bed used to haul supplies to Hoover Dam during its construction, a 913-foot elevation gain (515-5367).

Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club: Tuesday at 6:15 a.m. Meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail: dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). A 6:15 a.m. moderate to fast 15- to 20-mile road ride on Wednesday. Meet at the NuVision Cyclery on West Lake Mead Boulevard, between Rampart Boulevard and Scholar Lane (228-1333). There will be a 30-plus-mile, moderate and hilly ride Wednesday and Thursday at 7 a.m., and a 30- to 50-plus -mile grade ride on Saturday at 7 a.m. Meet behind Starbucks on West Charleston Boulevard and Town Center Drive. Friday at 6:15 a.m., meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). Bring plenty of water for all rides.

The Desert Riders Club of Nevada: The Las Vegas Desert Riders Club of Nevada, a local chapter of the Honda Rider's Club of America, meets at 9 a.m. the second Saturday of the month at Carter Power Sports, 6725 S. Decatur Blvd. All motorcycles are welcome (795-2000).

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center: "Bats in our Belfry," will be presented Tuesday, twice an hour from 8:30 a.m. to noon. On Friday, there will be an interactive program about the different types of snakes in the Mojave Desert, for children 2-6 years. Saturday's events will include a program about scorpions for children ages 2-5. Participants will get to learn facts, hear a story and complete an art project (515-5367).

Archaeo Nevada Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at College of Southern Nevada, 6375 W. Charleston Blvd., Building D, Room 213. Michael Green of College of Southern Nevada will present "Las Vegas in the 19th Century: What Happened Here, Stayed Here." The lecture will discuss the early years of Las Vegas (254-7883). Archaeo-Nevada Society along with the Bureau of Land Management invites volunteers to help with Red Rock Conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
