HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, an easy/moderate four-mile hike through Calico Hills will take place. A moderate/strenuous six-mile, out-and-back hike with some boulder scrambling will take place Tuesday at Oak Creek Canyon. A five-mile strenuous hike to the top of Bridge Mountain will be on Thursday. Saturday activities will include the second in a combined easy/moderate four-mile hike and spring wildflower discovery series at Pine Creek, a moderate three-four-mile hike to Oak Creek, and a 1.5-mile hike into the ornithological primeval world of nature to observe birds. On April 13, join this moderate/strenuous four-mile hike to the North Peak via Rock Gap Summit (525-5367).

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday at Red Rock. They meet at the Best Buy parking lot at West Charleston Boulevard and the Las Vegas Beltway in Summerlin for an 8:30 a.m. departure (228-0773).

Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club: Tuesday at 6:15 a.m. Meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). A 6:15 a.m. moderate to fast 15- to 20-mile road ride on Wednesday. Meet at the NuVision Cyclery on West Lake Mead Boulevard, between Rampart Boulevard and Scholar Lane (228-1333). There will be a 30-plus-mile, moderate and hilly ride Wednesday and Thursday at 7 a.m., and a 30- to 50-plus -mile grade ride on Saturday at 7 a.m. Meet behind Starbucks on West Charleston Boulevard and Town Center Drive. Friday at 6:15 a.m., meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). Bring plenty of water for all rides.

The Desert Riders Club of Nevada: The Las Vegas Desert Riders Club of Nevada, a local chapter of the Honda Rider's Club of America, meets at 9 a.m. the second Saturday of the month at Carter Power Sports, 6725 S. Decatur Blvd. All motorcycles are welcome (795-2000).

OTHER PROGRAMS

Valley of Fire Rock Art Tour: The Nevada Rock Art Foundation will lead a free tour to the rock art at Valley of Fire on Saturday. Future tours take place on the second Saturday of the month through May (804-6723).

Red Rock Canyon: A program about the birds of Red Rock Canyon will be presented Tuesday at the visitor center. This class is a must for those interested in helping with the next Christmas Bird Count. Space is limited. "Wild Horses and Burros -- Living Legends of the West" will be presented Saturday at the visitor center followed by an audio-visual program with experienced adopters from the National Wild Horse Association. Ongoing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. No sign-up is required. Also on Saturday bring 2 to 5 year olds for a program to look at butterflies and flowers, play games and complete an art project (515-5367).

Archaeo-Nevada Society: The Archaeo-Nevada Society will host a presentation by Terri Robinson on the Gold Butte Area. The event will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at College of Southern Nevada, 6375 W. Charleston, Building B, Room 140 (254-7883). The Archaeo-Nevada Society along with the Bureau of Land Management invites volunteers to help with Red Rock Conservation projects.
