HIKES

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday at Red Rock. They meet at the Best Buy parking lot at West Charleston Boulevard and the Las Vegas Beltway in Summerlin for an 8:30 a.m. departure (228-0773).

Red Rock Canyon: A two-mile, moderate-strenuous hike Monday up the sandstone for a gain of 400 feet. There will be scrambling, rock shelters and plenty of cactus. On Friday, some minor rock scrambling will take you up the canyon on Blue Diamond Hill, which is also called Fossil Canyon, exiting near the old gypsum mine. Return via Fossil Ridge. Five miles, moderate-strenuous, 700-foot gain. Saturday will feature a four-mile, easy-moderate hike to the old Wilson Homestead and the main trail beyond. On Jan. 13, a 4.7-mile moderate hike for Grand Circle Part 2. Hike from Lost Creek to Sandstone Quary and carpool back (515-5367).

Las Vegas Highlanders: From Willow Spring on Saturday, hike up North Peak Canyon then up Canadian Canyon to the Ridge Line under Standstone North Peak overlooking Red Rock Canyon, then trek down the ridge line. Moderate to strenuous, 1,200-foot elevation gain (onecoolhike@yahoo.com).

Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club: Tuesday at 6:15 a.m., meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail: dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). A 6:15 a.m. moderate to fast 15- to 20-mile road ride on Wednesday. Meet at the NuVision Cyclery on West Lake Mead Blvd., between Rampart Boulevard and Scholar Lane (228-1333). There will be a 30-plus-mile, moderate and hilly ride Wednesday and Thursday at 7 a.m., and a 30- to 50-plus -mile grade ride on Saturday at 7 a.m. Meet behind Starbucks on West Charleston Boulevard and Town Center Drive. Las Vegas Riders Club of Nevada: A local chapter of the Honda Rider's Club of America will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Carter Power Sports, 6725 S. Decatur Blvd. All motorcycles are welcome. As ride destinations and meeting locations vary, call 795-2000 for information.

Red Rock Canyon: "Wild Horse & Burro -- Living Legends of the West" will be presented on Saturday at the visitor center, ongoing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet Elizabeth the wild burro and her owner to learn how you can adopt one yourself. No sign-up required (515-5367).
