Lake Mead National Recreation Area: Monday, Anniversary Narrows, a moderate five-mile hike up Lovell Canyon, a dry desert wash, to the remains of an abandoned town site. On Wednesday, explore the geology of Boulder Basin while hiking up Red-Black Canyon. Switchbacks end with views of Lake Mead and the Las Vegas Valley on this five-mile moderate to strenuous hike. Call the Alan Bible Visitor Center at 293-8990 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Las Vegas Highlanders: A six-mile moderate hike to Arizona Hot Springs in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, down White Rock Canyon to the river. On the return, see petroglyphs over a dry falls. For meeting place, contact onecoolhike@yahoo.com.

The Las Vegas High Rollers and Strollers: Members of the American Volkssport Association will have an easy group walk Saturday at the South Strip. Meet at the Best Western Mardi Gras Inn, 3500 Paradise Road (731-2020).

Sierra Club: A moderate to strenuous five-mile hike Dec. 16 at Fortification Hill "Nun's Veil." A steep climb with a short stretch to rock scramble, then hike over volcanic rock. Call Dennis Hayes, 280-2424, for further details.

A 6:15 a.m. moderate to fast 15-20 mile road ride on Wednesday. Meet at the NuVision Cyclery on West Lake Mead Boulevard, between Rampart Boulevard and Scholar Lane (Danny or Mike at 228-1333). There will be a 30-plus mile, moderate and hilly ride Wednesday and Thursday at 7 a.m., and a 30 to 50-plus mile long grade ride on Saturday at 7 a.m. Meet behind Starbucks on West Charleston Boulevard and Town Center Drive. BARTA: A group of basin and range trail advocates meets Saturday at 9 a.m. to develop, protect and maintain trails, educate users on trail usage, sponsor a chapter of the National Mountain Bike Patrol and have noncompetitive events.
