HIKES

Lake Mead National Recreation Area: A five-mile moderate hike Monday through the reds, yellows and purples of Rainbow Canyon to the remains of Anniversary Mine. Return through Lowell Canyon. On Wednesday hike to the North Bowl of Fire and wander among a variety of Aztec sandstone formations. A moderate seven-mile hike with some rock scrambling (293-8990).

Red Rock Canyon, Red & Black Mountains: Friday, a strenuous hike to the summits on both peaks. A seven-mile loop with 1,500 feet elevation gain (515-5367).

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people, 50 years and over, interested in hiking and related social activities, will meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot in front of Best Buy, at Charleston Boulevard and I-215 in Summerlin, for a moderate three-hour hike at Red Rock. The Las Vegas High Rollers and Strollers: Members of the American Volkssport Association will have a moderate group walk at 7 a.m. Saturday at Lake Mead. Meet at the Hacienda Hotel and Casino, U.S. Highway 93 in Boulder City (242-4105).

Sierra Club: Join the Southern Nevada Group on Saturday in the Red Stone Picnic Area at Lake Mead National Recreation Area for a moderate to strenuous 10-mile hike. Dogs OK (433-0743). On Dec. 2, hike through sandstone formations on the way to White Domes and an old movie set. Some rock scrambling on this five-mile easy to strenuous hike (875-4549).

A 6:15 a.m. moderate to fast 15-20 mile road ride on Wednesday. Meet at the NuVision Cyclery on West Lake Mead Boulevard, between Rampart Boulevard and Scholar Lane (228-1333). There will be a 30-plus mile, moderate and hilly ride Wednesday and Thursday at 7 a.m., and a 30 to 50-plus mile long grade ride on Saturday at 7 a.m. Meet behind Starbucks on West Charleston Boulevard and Town Center Drive. BARTA: A group of basin and range trail advocates meet Saturday at 9 a.m. to develop, protect and maintain trails, educate users on trail usage, sponsor a chapter of the National Mountain Bike Patrol and have noncompetitive events.
